Judges to Esther – Lesson 12 Class Notes

Introduction

This lesson explores the qualities that made David a man after God’s heart. His life shows that godly character is revealed through public victories and private obedience, patience, and humility.

Main Characters

David: A shepherd, warrior, and king. His godly character is exhibited through trust in God, patience, and self-control.

Saul: The first king of Israel. His rejection of God leads to paranoia, violence, and destruction.

Abigail: A wise woman who prevents a massacre by appealing to David’s conscience.

Context

The story unfolds before David officially becomes king. Even when allowed to seize power, David waits for God’s timing. His actions teach us that godly character is shaped through waiting and obedience.

Summary

  • Trust in God: David demonstrates his trust in God when he faces Goliath, acknowledging that the victory comes from the Lord (1 Samuel 17).
  • Patience and Loyalty: David honors Saul, the Lord’s anointed, and refuses to kill him on two occasions. He exhibits patience as he waits for God’s timing.
  • Self-Control: Although encouraged by his men to take vengeance, David acts based on principles rather than impulses.
  • Humility in Power: When three soldiers risk their lives to bring him water, David pours it out as an offering to God, choosing not to use his power selfishly.
  • Correction and Repentance: After being insulted by Nabal, David initially plans revenge but listens to Abigail, recognizes his error, and avoids bloodshed.

Conclusion

Godly character is displayed when we choose to trust, wait, and obey, even when we could justify acting otherwise. Like David, we should ask God to shape in us a heart after His own.
